PROJECTION DESIGN
THE WIZARD OF OZ
This is my most recent and complex projection design to date and was produced in the same space as The Addams Family the previous season. What an adventure designing, building, and painting the set while simultaneously creating content for projections and learning to use Mad Mapper for the first time. Up until this production, I had not specifically mapped a projection design. Through the process, I developed an appreciation for what mapping can provide a design team and I very much look forward to continuing to explore this media.
THE PROM
The Prom was my first experience as a Projection Designer (and Scenic Designer) in my career, and had the luxury of designing the show with a preinstalled full-stage LED screen, in an outdoor theatre, in the height of the summer, and in southern Missouri! It was hot! Not to mention no fly space, no wing space, and no space upstage or downstage. I had a simmering concrete deck, a large LED screen, and a newly installed canopy as "The Tent." I loved it! I grew up in a sweltering hot summer theatre and I felt at home.
I am forever indebted to The Tent Theatre Company for trusting my creative contribution and selecting me to design scenery and projections for this powerful production. I was anxious as a first-time dual assignment designer for The Tent and the first time working with this Director.
As best described,
I was true! I had over-designed the projections for this show, but I had a wonderful Director and creative team beside me. I was determined to be successful telling this story, in good-timing, and with full, unyielding support of the characters.
The Director and I had to cut content. You would agree if you would have witnessed the monstrosity I had naively assembled. Cuts were necessary! The Director had a clear vision of the show's trajectory, and I was eager to follow her lead. I trusted her decisive choices as we quickly approached opening night in a very compressed tech schedule. I left that meeting experiencing one of the most memorable collaborations of my career and with arms loads of content to use elsewhere! :)
The show was a big success, and I'm forever indebted to all involved.
BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL
The same venue, the same company, and the same director as The Prom. We learned A LOT last season and had a wonderful time doing so. We made many discoveries last summer and promised not to let those lessons go to waste. This show was a true gem. It was beautifully cast, directed, designed and built. The orchestra was on fire! The whole team was determined to make this show a huge success. It was truly beautiful!
MYSTIC PIZZA
Mystic Pizza was another very rewarding experience. Of course, this was another huge undertaking with nearly the same creative team, with only a few exceptions. One being, I had not experienced the joy of designing for The Tent's long-term Artistic Director. What a joy to see this show come to life and to collaborate with someone new. I had learned A LOT the previous season and was thankful those lessons served our visions well. It really was another a wonderful experience. Mystic Pizza was truly a showstopper concluding a highly successful 2024 season.
THE ADDAMS FAMILY
The Cody Theatre is a charming Art Deco space built in 1936. It was previously used as a movie theatre until its new owners began converting it into a live performance venue, and have been very successful at doing so. Given the theatre's history as a movie theatre, I had access to a robust digital movie projector and very little knowledge about how to use it. I had not explored projection mapping at this time and was somewhat intimidated by the opportunity. I was overthinking it - but I was also responsible for designing, building, and painting the set too! I'm glad I had this experience and in good timing. This opportunity helped me prepare for The Wizard of Oz, slated in the same venue the following season. However, a time there was no indication that I'd be returning for a much larger endeavor the following season!
